Cross-cutting discussion - Indicators and the Solidarity Economy
Solidarity economy actors’ goal of promoting an alternative development model depends on their ability to drive change in representations of the economy and wealth so that they are no longer confined to the concepts of market and growth. The challenge is two-pronged: to demonstrate how solidarity economy initiatives and networks create collective benefits that are specific to society, and to show how they contribute to an alternative representation of the economy. An evaluation of what constitutes a society’s wealth is therefore crucial, both in terms of the criteria and mechanisms used to measure the common good, and the indicators specific to the solidarity economy.

The way ahead for the WSSE
In late 2005 the WSSE is coming to the end of a work cycle characterized essentially by the continuation of thematic workshop activities, the launch of the cross-cutting workshops and significant networking activity, notably at the social forums. The 2006/2007 period is opening up a new phase where there is a need to find a balance between discussion activities and network creation activities, between thematic workshops and cross-cutting workshops, and between furthering alliances and widening the pool of partners.

Participation in the Globalization of Solidarity meeting
The choice of Dakar as the meeting
venue was influenced by the wish of
several WSSE members to take part
in the third Globalization of Solidarity
conference (22 to 26 November 2005).
This event organized by RIPESS is
an international gathering of social
and solidarity economy actors (for
more information see the site: http://www.ripess.net/).
The presence of WSSE participants
is important in contributing to the
construction of strategies that can
strengthen the solidarity economy
in the context of globalization.

Wautiez and Laurent Fraisse
